“Laser beam towards Milky Way’s Centre.” The purpose of the laser is for use as part of an adaptive optics system, basically creating an artificial star to help guide the Very Large Telescope and correct for blurring due to distortions as light enters earth’s atmosphere. Honestly, there are so many things that I love about this photo.
